As the winter gloom settles in, I’ve found the perfect way to add some sparkle to the season—Vaux Blanc de Noirs 2022. This exciting new Deutscher Sekt, crafted entirely from spätburgunder (pinot noir) grapes, will be hitting shelves in a limited release of 6,000 bottles on January 31st. Naturally, I couldn’t wait to give it a try!
The Wine and Vintage
The grapes for this Blanc de Noirs come from the Mittelhaardt area of Pfalz, Germany. Harvested both by hand and machine during the cool early morning hours, the grapes remain fresh and vibrant as they begin their journey to the bottle. The process is meticulous—gentle pressing avoids skin contact, and the wine is produced using the traditional method, with a second fermentation in the bottle. It’s then aged on the lees for 18 months, allowing its flavors to fully develop.
The 2022 vintage was a challenging but rewarding one. With scorching summer heat stressing the vines in Pfalz, rain arrived just in time for harvest, saving the crop. Thanks to careful vineyard management, the result is a wine that showcases the year’s intense fruitiness and bright acidity—qualities I could immediately taste in my first sip.
My First Impressions
This sparkling wine is a true winter gem. The delicate mousse is balanced with crisp acidity, and the palate reveals flavors of ripe red apples, subtle berries, and a hint of toasted brioche. There’s a beautiful finesse to this wine that speaks to its quality craftsmanship. It’s the perfect companion for festive gatherings or an indulgent treat on a quiet evening in.
