Discover The Essence Of Terroir: Nivarius Unveils The Forgotten Maturana Blanca Grape

Nivarius, the renowned producer with a focus on terroir, shines a spotlight on the overlooked indigenous grape variety, Maturana Blanca. Cultivated in a cool and high-altitude vineyard, Nivarius is dedicated to crafting exceptional wines that showcase the true potential of the Maturana Blanca grape.

Located in Nalda, Rioja, just 17 kilometers south of Logrono, Nivarius sets its sights on the vineyards above the winery. With northern slopes ranging from 500 to 850 meters in elevation, winemaker Javier Palacios has a clear vision—to establish the first and only winery entirely devoted to white Rioja wines. Collaborating with Pedro Parra and Alberto Antonini, they have conducted extensive research over the past decade, cultivating vineyards spanning 120 hectares with a strong emphasis on terroir.

Finca La Nevera, a single vineyard spanning 4.3 hectares, sits at an elevation of 680 to 750 meters. The soil composition comprises two layers—colluvial sand from rocky formations and a mixture of silica sand and silt. The bottom layer consists of a light clay that helps retain moisture.

Crafted from 100% Maturana Blanca, an almost forgotten grape variety that dates back to 1622 in Rioja, this wine showcases its resurgence due to its early ripening and high acidity. The 2017 vintage underwent fermentation in French oak barrels at a controlled temperature. It was then aged on lees for 36 months in stainless steel tanks, with regular stirring to protect against oxidation and maintain a low sulfite level.

This wine exhibits an enticing aromatic intensity, with notes of stone fruit, pear, quince, and wild herbs, complemented by subtle mineral undertones. On the palate, it offers a fresh and taut profile, impressively balanced with a remarkable tension and mouthfeel. The lingering finish reveals ripe stone fruit flavors intertwined with aromatic herbs.
