Agitator Whiskey makers surprise again with a new exciting taste experience. This time they present something as unusual as a rye whiskey aged in barrels that previously contained maple syrup. What consumers can expect are flavors such as acacia honey, vanilla, red apples and syrupy sweetness.
Producing rye whiskey is a challenge in itself. Rye lacks an outer shell that barley has. This makes the mash bed more compact and it becomes more difficult to get liquid to flow through the sieve plates. In addition, the mash made from rye becomes more viscous and has a thicker consistency, which in some cases resembles wallpaper paste. That combination makes it a greater challenge to produce the rye mash, but in the end we get a different distillate, with clear spicy notes that go towards the crispbread style.
– The rye whiskey is by far the whiskey we had the most challenges in producing, but the result is worth the effort, says Oskar Bruno, Distillery Manager at Agitator.
For Agitator, it is natural to try new fat types. The maple syrup cask is a fun cask that contributes new deep flavors, where the burnt note from maple syrup adds complexity and the sweetness balances out the whiskey. It challenges in a new exciting way, and shows that other fat types can be used. The combination of spicy rye notes and maple syrup felt enticing. A lovely combination that brings to mind a classic cocktail.
Rye whiskey is an interesting product to work with and being able to use that base together with maple syrup casks felt too exciting to pass up. Agitator Argument Maple syrup barrel has a strength of 46%. Best drunk neat or with a little ice or why not try mixing a classic Old Fashioned.
